How to use this guide:
My purpose in creating this resource guide is to provide ideas to other teachers seeking to implement global education in their classrooms. Through my participation in the Teacher for Global Classrooms Fellowship, I feel my passion for teaching has been reinvigorated. I now see my role in the classroom differently- as a link to the outside world for my students. The ideas presented during our 8-week online course led me to try approaching history and geography differently; with a more global, action-centered focus, with student-centered learning and more relevant uses of technology. Among the resources in this guide, you will find self-assessments, student learning assessments, inventories of resources available, standards that have been updated to include global learning competencies, unit plans and lessons incorporating global learning, local community resources, my personal research and travel blog, as well as suggestions for how to implement global education in your own classrooms. Don’t try everything at once, instead look through these resources to determine what you are already doing, and then implement a few ideas slowly. As with any new strategy, it won’t always go smoothly, but your students will appreciate your efforts and with time, you will find the resources that best fit your needs. I think you will find that through the use of these resources, you too, will find yourself with a new, refocused passion for teaching.

3. WHY GLOBAL EDUCATION?The students in our classrooms today are growing up in an increasingly connected world, yet our education system may not adequately be preparing them for success in this new global community. Due in thanks to technology, transportation, and diplomacy, our students will have opportunities for global interaction that likely exceeds our imagination. In order to equip our students with the necessary skills and understanding for these exciting opportunities, we must begin fostering global competency in our classrooms.

This 2 minute YouTube video drives home the idea that 21st century skills and global education run hand-in-hand, and our classrooms must adjust to these new student needs.
Below, you will find Dr. William Gaudelli's Frameworks for Developing Global Competency. I found this useful when trying to wrap my mind around how global learning is approached. Many of our schools already have a somewhat neo-liberal approach toward global competency, but the other frameworks are likely not something we have thought of.
